The Heart of Yggdrasil

Freya does not climb Yggdrasil. She walks it.

The World Tree rises around her in endless spirals of root and branch, its bark older than the gods. At her hip swings a bag the colour of deep northern water. On the flap, the Tree itself is etched in black—roots and crown locked in an eternal knot that mirrors the living wood beneath her feet. On the back, her own image rides: cloak streaming, sword raised, horned helm catching the light of nine worlds. And inside, pressed close against her body, rests a heart of interwoven red and black—the quiet Valknut of love and fate she alone is allowed to carry.

The bag was not made for her. It was left for her.

Long ago a mortal hand traced these same lines onto living leather, never knowing the goddess would one day claim it. When Freya first touched the teal surface, the leather warmed. The carved roots on the flap seemed to drink from the real Yggdrasil. The heart against her side beat once, slow and certain.

Now, whenever the horn sounds across the nine worlds, Freya opens the flap and draws out what only she can see: the names of those who will ride with her that night. The Valkyries gather in the high branches, silver-haired and silent, waiting for the signal. Freya never speaks a command. She simply turns, the turquoise bag swinging against her thigh, her own fierce likeness watching from the reverse, and begins to walk the great spiral road that only the living Tree knows.

Wherever the bag brushes the bark, a faint glow follows—gold at the heart, teal at the edges—marking the path for the dead who will follow. The interlocked heart never fades. It is the quiet reminder that even the chooser of the slain still remembers what it is to love.

And so the Valkyries ride, led not by spear or banner, but by a single teal bag that carries the World Tree on its face, the goddess on its back, and a heart of fate held close against her side.
