Millions of Peaches

Once, in a quiet orchard under a soft summer sky, the peaches were happy.

They grew together on the same branches, laughed in the wind, and dreamed of nothing more than ripening in the sun. One morning the baskets came. Then the conveyor belts. The water. The heat. The machines that did not know their names. One by one they were pressed, sealed, and labelled.

“Peaches come from a can,” the labels said, as if that was all they had ever been.

For a long time it felt like the end of the story. The orchard was empty. The trees stood quiet. The peaches who had once known the sky now lived in small metal rooms, stacked in dark places, waiting.

But something unexpected happened.

People opened the cans and smiled. Children asked for more. A song was written — loud, silly, and full of joy — and suddenly the peaches were everywhere again. Not as they had been, but as something new: a memory that could be shared, a taste of summer that lasted through winter, a joke that made strangers laugh together.

The sadness never fully left. It still lives in the lines of the machines and the quiet of the empty orchard. But it is no longer the whole story.

Now the peaches travel in a different way. They ride on a hand-dyed leather bag the colour of sunset, their journey laser-etched in four small panels so no one forgets where they came from or how far they went. What began as an ending became a celebration.
